Cryolipolysis for fat reduction is an ideal treatment for stubborn areas of fat that have been difficult to lose despite diet and exercise. It is an ideal treatment if you want to lose fat in a particular area and wish to avoid surgery. In our clinic we use the CoolTech system, which is clinically proven – based on over 1,000,000 treatments – with a customer satisfaction rate of more than 90%.

This treatment may be combined with BodyFx and forma radiofrequency fat heating to improve results and tighten skin between fat freezing sessions.

How does Cryolipolysis work?

CoolTech is a permanent fat-reducing treatment for the body. The technology works by the process of cryolipolysis, in which fat cells are frozen by a controlled cooling system – overall a reduction of fat cell number is achieved in the treated area. The reason for this is that fat cells are particularly sensitive to temperature, and freezing results in some cell death of this cell type, but not other cells in an area such as skin, nerves or muscle.

The method is non-invasive, safe and effective and may give similar outcomes to liposuction – just without surgery. Up to 35% of fat cells in a particular area can be removed in 1-3 treatments with minimal downtime. We can treat the abdominal area, flanks, hips, inner and outer thighs, knees and the lower buttocks.

Radio frequency with BodyFx can be used between cryolipolysis sessions to optimise results, every week for 6-8 weeks. This works by heating the fat cells to 43 degrees celsius then passing a small electrical pulse through the cells to cause a process known as ‘electroporation’, where the cells are destroyed.

What can I expect from the treatment?

For each area being treated, the CoolTech system is applied to the skin and a vacuum in the machine sucks the fat into the hand piece. The cooling is then applied for approximately 70 minutes. For the first 6-8 minutes there may be a little discomfort but after this the cooling has an anaesthetic effect and the rest of the treatment is generally pain free. When the machine is detached, the area treated is then massaged to assist removal of dead fat cells and restore blood flow to the area.

Radio frequency with BodyFx involves gentle heating of the area being treated, again with vacuum. A tiny electrical pulse may be felt at the end of each application.

Cryolipolysis can be used to treat stubborn fat in any body area. The ideal candidate will be a patient who has tried to lose fat via diet and exercise but is struggling to lose the a pocket of fat in a particular area e.g. the abdomen or outer thighs. The treatment works well on: abdominal fat, inner and outer thighs, flanks (or ‘love handles’) and even the arms.

What do I do after the treatment and is there any downtime?

The skin may be a little red and cold after the treatment but downtime is minimal. Some swelling and mild discomfort may be expected immediately after the treatment. The skin will normally become numb for a number of weeks after the treatment and sensation should return around week 12-16. This is entirely normal and should not be any cause for concern.

How long does it take to work?

The results fro fat freezing are not immediate as the body needs time to remove the dead fat cells. You can often see a partial result after about 4 weeks and the final result about 12 weeks later. A second cryolipolysis treatment can be performed at 6-8 weeks for optimal results.

How many treatments are needed?

Usually 2-3 CoolTech treatments are needed for optimal results. If this is being performed with BodyFx, usually 6-8 sessions of BodyFx are required in total.

What are the risks?

Although most treatments are successful, since this treatment relies on your own body to clear dead fat cells, a small percentage of patients do not see a result (approximately 10%). This is the case with any cryolipolysis form of treatment such as CoolSculpting or 3Dlipo. A common phenomenon after all cryolipolysis treatments is that the skin in the treated area becomes numb for a period of time. This is completely reversible and normal. Burns and skin injury are extremely uncommon but it is important that any treatment is performed by a practitioner fully trained in this treatment.
