Over this last few years, PRP treatments for hair loss have gained significant popularity as a step between using Propecia and hair transplant surgery. Dr. David Jack offers PRP treatments for hair loss at his clinics in Harley Street in London and Edinburgh.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) hair loss treatment?
PRP treatment stimulates new hair growth in areas where hair has been lost, for example in male and female pattern baldness and androgenic alopecia. One of the most appealing aspects of PRP is that no artificial chemicals or toxins are used, just your own blood which has been treated and re-injected into your body.
What are the benefits?
This treatment stimulates dormant and live follicles to start producing thicker, stronger hair again and is an effective alternative or adjunct to hair transplant surgery for men and women. It delivers generally impressive results, with some studies showing between 20-60% increase in thickness and cover of hair in areas treated.
How does PRP work?
A small sample of your own blood is taken and centrifuged to isolate the platelets. These are then re-injected under local anaesthetic into the scalp where there has been hair loss. This causes the platelets to activate and release a large quantity of growth factors that stimulate the hair follicles to start producing thicker, stronger hair again.

FAQ's
After an assessment and consultation, Dr. Jack will take a small sample of your blood from a vein in the arm. This sample will then be placed in a centrifuge machine to isolate the ‘platelet-rich’ portion of your blood (platelet rich plasma or PRP). Dr. Jack will also numb your scalp with a strong topical local anaesthetic cream or gel.
Once the blood is centrifuged and the PRP isolated, it will then be injected into the scalp using a tiny needle.
There is virtually no downtime with this treatment. Dr. Jack usually spreads some ‘Platelet Poor Plasma’ (‘PPP’ - i.e. plasma without platelets) on the scalp to help seal the tiny needle marks immediately after the treatment. It is recommended that you don’t wash your hair during the first 8-12 hours after the treatment.
Usually at least 3 treatments are required, spaced about 3-4 weeks apart
As this treatment relies on your own body’s responses to the injection of PRP, the results usually take around 6 months to become evident.
Usually it is recommended that a top up treatment is done once every 6 months following the initial treatment course.
Yes, PRP can be done with other hair stimulating treatments. Dr Jack would be delighted to discuss your requirements and create a personalised treatment package tailored specifically for you.
